KALKASKA – After more than 25 years of service with the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department, Harry Shipp is finally just a normal citizen again.

Shipp, who had served the law enforcement agencies in a variety of roles over the years, officially retired from his position as undersheriff on April 30.

For the 56-year-old Shipp, originally a native of southern Ohio, retiring isn’t exactly a new experience. He retired as a chief warrant officer from the U.S. Marine Corps after 20 years, including 12 in active service and another eight with the Marine Corps Reserves.

Shipp said he first started coming to northern Michigan in the mid-1980s. It helped that his wife, of three decades, Cindy, was from the area. The couple met while both were still in the Marines.

“I think I’ve owned property in Kalkaska County since about 1986,” he said during an interview in January 2016 when he was appointed undersheriff. “I love to hunt and fish. That’s why I liked to come up here.”

Sheriff Patrick Whiteford said it was Shipp’s varied experience, both in the military and with the KCSD that ultimately led him to choose the veteran sergeant as his second in command.
