Trojans sweep Lancers in volleyball opener

ELLSWORTH — Central Lake and Ellsworth’s volleyball teams broke the seal on the 2020 season on Monday when the Trojans swept the host Lancers 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 in a non-league contest on Monday.

Central Lake was challenged at times by Ellsworth but in the end the Trojans just had too much for the Lancers. Fast starts by the Trojans in the first and third sets sent them on their way to victory, despite Ellsworth battling back in both cases. Central Lake was in front 4-1 to start the opening set, but Ellsworth rallied to make it 7-5. The Trojans’ lead stayed small until they used a run of six straight points to pull in front 14-6. That proved to be the difference as the teams played fairly evenly the rest of the way.

In the third game Central Lake built an even bigger advantage from the outset, scoring the first six points of the set on the way to staking out a 9-1 lead. With Central Lake looking to finish the match in three sets, Ellsworth was able to get back into contention and got within two points, 13-11. Once again Central Lake responded, though, stringing together four straight points to create some separation and ultimately completed the season-opening triumph.

The Trojans held the upper hand for nearly the entire night, although Ellsworth showed its ability in the second set, turning a 6-3 Central Lake lead into a 7-6 Lancers’ edge. Ellsworth led by as many as four points, 10-6, before the Trojans caught them to even the game 10-10. The set was tied again at 12-12 and Central Lake went ahead for good at 13-12. The Trojans built the margin to as many as six points later on and were on the cusp of getting the game two win when it held a 24-21 lead. Ellsworth tried to mount a late comeback, getting to within a point, 24-23, before Central Lake secured the last point it needed.
