Suzanne Russell

Suzanne Russell, 90, of Kalkaska passed away Tuesday morning, May 7, 2019.
She was born on May 18, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio to the late Russell and Susan (Osgood) Armentrout of Monroe, Michigan.
Suzanne graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Eastern Michigan University with a Master of Arts in Education. Her passion for educating young minds was evident from the very beginning of her career. She was a pioneer of childhood education, helping to launch the Head Start program that is now implemented across the nation.
She taught early elementary education in various schools in southern Michigan before settling with her family in Kalkaska in 1968, where she continued her career in education until retirement around 1985.
Suzanne was an active member of the Kalkaska community volunteering in many clubs including the Kalkaska Historical Society, Academia Club, and St. Paul Lutheran Church. She greatly enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time with her friends and family.
Suzanne was an incredibly warm and caring person that used her many gifts to encourage children, support her community and love her family. She was well-loved and will be missed by many.
Suzanne will be lovingly remembered by her children: Leslie E (Penny) Russell Jr., Thomas D (Kelly) Russell, Mary K (Paul) Tucker, James R (Dawn) Russell, and Susan E (Roger) Gann; grandchildren: Dr. Lyndsay Tamborelle, Jonathan M. Russell, Lauren Wiley, Jenny Hall, Sarah Mengers, Diana Weber, Aaron R. Tucker, Andrew P. Tucker, Rachael E. Strasser, Sara Collins, Ryann Collins, Kelsey Collins, and Connor Russell; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents; and husband of 45 years, Leslie Russell.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Kalkaska Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska. The family will receive friends for a final visitation at 1 p.m. until the time of service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kalkaska Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
