Students make cards for classmate’s father serving in Afghanistan
BELLAIRE – Students in kindergarten through third grade, attending the Bellaire Youth Center (BYC), recently sent spring picture cards, which they personally colored, to their classmate’s father, Sgt. Donovan Duran Sr.
Donovan Sr. is currently serving in Afghanistan as part of the U.S. Army Reserve. He has spent more than 12 years in the Marines and is now an Army Administrator, where he handles all paperwork for medals, awards and other commendations for his unit.
Donovan Jr., a third-grader, explained to his friends that his father is away to serve his country and to provide for his family. He suggested that his BYC classmates use the color “orange” in their pictures, because it is his favorite, and that Razzles sour candy is, too.
“Our BYC students spent a good part of their free time last Tuesday coloring pictures to say, ‘Thank you for protecting us,’” said BYC Coordinator Debbie Goldenberg.
