Kalkaska Public Schools, along with a mix of community members, broke the Guinness Book World Record for the most people in one place wearing mismatched socks on April 25. The final count was 1,393. Pictured with mismatched socks are KPS students Drake Dunham, Jaden Hughes and Logan Leadman.

KALKASKA – Justin Kinsella, an eighth-grader at Kalkaska Middle School, had two goals in mind this spring: break a world record and feed as many people as possible.

His first goal required getting the Kalkaska Public School staff on board with bringing all of their students to the football field on a specific day wearing mismatched socks. His church said they would help with the crowds and with students walking from the four in-town schools.

And, on April 25 at 9 a.m., the Kalkaska Public Schools, along with a mix of community members, broke the Guinness Book World Record for the most people in one place wearing mismatched socks. The final count was 1,393.

His other goal also needed the help of the KPS community in the way of donations to help feed the needy. Every summer, Justin’s church packs meals for the needy and ships them off to specific destinations. Each meal costs only 25 cents to make and Justin was overwhelmed with the total amount of money raised. That amount totaled over $500 and will provide over 2,000 meals!

“I couldn’t have accomplished my goals without the help of my parents, my church and my school district,” Justin stated.
