Springfield Twp. OK’s $16K for new playground equipment
SPRINGFIELD TWP. – The Springfield Township Park and Recreation Area has become a favorite gathering place for township residents.
And, the Springfield Township Board of Trustees once again displayed its support for the facility by approving $16,000 for new playground equipment.
“It passed with flying colors,” said Bonnie Gonyer, township treasurer of the unanimous vote at the board’s May meeting. “Our biggest concern right now is the equipment that’s there. There’s safety concerns.”
Hank Parkey, chairman of the township’s Park and Recreation Committee, said the existing playground equipment at the park, located at the intersection of Lund and Creighton roads, doesn’t meet safety requirements for a public facility.
“The playground has never been up to code,” Parkey said. “It’s rated residential. We needed commercial grade to keep the playground open.”
The need for new equipment had park supporters before the township board. And, Gonyer said there was little hesitation by board members to lend a helping hand – and the $16,000.
“Absolutely, we were on board,” she said. “We’re not some big municipality.
“(But) it’s really all we have to offer the community,” the treasurer added. “Our park is our shining gem.”
