Speed listed as factor in fatal two-vehicle crash

EXCELSIOR TWP. – A fatal accident on the afternoon of Monday, March 6, along County Road 571 in Kalkaska County’s Excelsior Township claimed the life of one local teenager, while also resulting in injuries to at least two others.

According to Sheriff Patrick Whiteford, officials at Kalkaska County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at around 4:30 p.m. Monday regarding an accident on County Road 571, about one-eighth of a mile north of Meyers Road.

Deputies reported that a silver 2011 Ford Focus, driven by a 16-year-old male from Kalkaska, had crossed the center line and struck an American Waste garbage truck traveling southbound.

“The driver lost control of the Focus as he and his 16-year-old female passenger were traveling northbound on County Road 571,” Whiteford said in a prepared statement.

The 16-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department (KCSD) reports, while the female passenger was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City in critical condition.

The driver of the garbage truck, a 46-year-old Alden man, was “medically cleared and released at the scene,” according to Whiteford.

“Deputies have determined that speed was a factor in the crash,” he added. “Alcohol was not believed to be a factor.”

The fatal crash remains under investigation.
