PELLSTON — It took a sixth counter tiebreaker to determine the winner of Saturday’s Pellston Invitational, with the Kalkaska boys team claiming first in front of Mancelona by three places.

Both teams finished with 44 points, well ahead of third place Cheboygan’s 86. But the Blazers’ Travis Blasko was three places (22-25) and 26 seconds (19:07-19:33) in front of Mancelona’s Ben Palmer to give Kalkaska the meet victory.

Blasko’s performance was one of five personal bests for the Blazers’ top six runners. One of those PRs belonged to freshman Tyler Guggemos, who was the overall boys winner in 16:57. Hayden Moore came in fourth (17:27), Nathan Blasko was 12th (18:31), Caleb Hicks was 14th (18:34) and Cole McKenzie was 16th (18:50).

Tyler McClure was 29 seconds behind Guggemos in second overall to lead Mancelona. Stoney Schram (sixth, 18:05) and Jimmy Dunne (ninth, 18:20) gave the Ironmen two more top-10 finishers, while Tommy Palmer (13th, 18:34) and Greg Parsons (17th, 18:57) rounded out Mancelona’s counters.

Mancelona’s girls were first on their side with 26 points, followed by Cheboygan in second with 43 and Kalkaska in third with 54.
