Side Bar - Local Republicans establish Conservative Union branch

Following Barry Goldwater’s defeat in the presidential election of 1964, several conservative thinkers got together in Washington, D.C. to ponder the future of the conservative movement in America. Among those in attendance was William F. Buckley, founder and editor and publisher of “The National Review,” a monthly magazine dedicated to conservative ideas. Out of this meeting, the American Conservative Union was born with Donald Bruce, a Republican congressman from Indiana elected as its first chairman.
