Side Bar - BOC vote shows disrespect for Veterans Affairs Committee

You’d think approving an appointment to fill a vacancy on the Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC) would be a simple, straight forward piece of business for the Antrim County Board of Commissioners (BOC) to handle without controversy, right? Well, you’d be wrong.
A notice of the vacancy and inviting interested citizens who qualified to apply for the position appeared in this newspaper earlier this year. Several people applied for it. They were all military veterans which was a requirement. All applications were reviewed by Deborah Peters, Veteran Affairs director and members of her committee. Among those applying for the position were Calvin Shooks, a Central Lake resident and Vietnam War veteran and Libby Hiser. She is a Bellaire resident and a Gulf War veteran. Members of the VAC decided to recommend Ms. Hiser to the BOC as their choice to fill the vacant seat on their committee.
