Sheriff's Office to welcome new canine officer

BELLAIRE – Four months after the tragic loss of its canine officer, which the department had only recently acquired, the Antrim County Sheriff's Office is anticipaing the arrival of a new canine officer, Sheriff Dan Bean announced last week.

Like Ori, the 16-month-old German shepherd who died after being hit by a car during a training event in Kalkaska County just a few weeks after coming into service last October, the new dog will be purchased in Europe by Mid-Michigan Kennels, a canine law enforcement training facility near Eaton Rapids, according to Antrim County Undersheriff Dean Pratt.

Funds for the new officer came from insurance monies paid after the death of Ori, Pratt said.

Although Pratt did not say how much had been paid for the purchase and extensive training of the new dog, Antrim County was able to purchase Ori last year after an August 2017 donation of $17,250 from a Community Foundation Endowment.
