KALKASKA - The Village of Kalkaska could be nearing the end of a more than four-year legal war over whether it was required to provide a handful of former employees with lifetime health care benefits.

After a closed session to discuss the lawsuits at its regular meeting Monday, May 14, the Kalkaska Village Council voted to approve a motion that could end the legal feud with three former village employees – including the former village police chief and manager Melvin Hill, William Ramsey and Helen Chew-Artress, who just recently retired.

The motion stated that the council authorized newly elected Village President Hayley Wales to sign “the confidential release and settlement agreement in the matters” with the trio of former employees “as presented, and further that we reject the request by Helen Chew-Artress for additional funds.”

Village manager Scott Yost said no other details regarding a potential settlement could be released at this time.
