Ready to roll: Robotics teams gear up for state competition
BELLAIRE – For the first time in school history, two robotics teams from Bellaire Public Schools have earned the numbers to showcase their skills and talents at the state level – and possibly beyond.
This weekend in Charlotte, the middle school team “Batteries Not Included” will take its VEX IQ number-one ranking in the state (14th in the world) to compete against Michigan’s best on Sunday, March 4. One day earlier will see the elementary-level “Bellaire Bots” (17th in the state, 275th in the world) face their own top challengers.
Both teams are hoping to perform well enough to earn a coveted spot in World Competition, scheduled for late April in Louisville, Kentucky.
Hopes are high among both teams’ members, mentors and the school advisor.
“This last season there have been amazing success for our first year VEX IQ teams,” said Chris Vandergriff, middle school science teacher and advisor for Bellaire’s Robotics program. “These two teams in particular have done quite well, especially when you consider the program hasn’t been around that long.”
