Rapid City food pantry offers fellowship
RAPID CITY — What began as a father and son volunteer effort turned into a major improvement to the Rapid City food pantry, located at the Torch Lake Assembly of God church in town.
Trevor Darnell, who is a regular volunteer there, suggested to his son Grant Darnell that they could work on a way to get the floor of the pantry and community room resurfaced. The old floor had been covered with carpet, but once that was removed, a pockmarked concrete surface made its appearance and was not safe or sanitary. They measured and figured costs, decided on an epoxy finish, and got the ball rolling towards an improvement.
Grant is a Junior Honor Society member at Cherryland Middle School in Elk Rapids and needed to complete a number of community volunteer hours as a requirement for membership. After receiving a grant from the Alden Men’s Club, with a lot of volunteer help from others, the plans went ahead. Some mistakes were made in estimating cost, but with a bit of extra last minute funding from the Alden Men’s Club, the project was finished in mid-November. As Grant looks back, he recognizes how his effort was significant.
