Putting Down Roots: Kalkaska gains 50 new trees in parks, residential streets
KALKASKA – Releaf Michigan partnered with the Kalkaska Downtown Development Authority and other agencies to organize a community tree planting event on Saturday, Oct. 21. More than 40 volunteers showed up to help plant the trees at Chalker Park, the Mill Pond, Cherry Street, and Third Street.
The event began at Chalker Park, where organizers explained what types of trees they were planting and gave a demonstration on how to properly plant each tree. The trees, which came from Barker Creek and Shade Tree Unlimited, were not small saplings. Many of the trees towered over volunteers’ heads and were around two to four inches in diameter.
“The larger trees help give them a head start, it’s an immediate impact on the community,” said conservation specialist Renee Penny of the Kalkaska Conservation District.
