Public offers input on proposed library expansion

Village resident Lou Sanford was one of numerous individuals offering input Monday night to Elk Rapids Village Council members who are currently considering approval of a plan to expand the village-owned district library building.

ELK RAPIDS – For those expecting an angry mob of townsfolk brandishing torches and pitchforks at Monday’s special meeting/public hearing – scheduled by the Elk Rapids Village Council to hear input on a proposal to expand its library – they would have been disappointed.

The much-talked about expansion proposal, actively launched by the district library’s board nearly two years ago, has continued to fester and create division throughout the community.

However, even with drawing more than 100 people and the watchful eyes of two uniformed village police officers, Monday’s meeting was calm and offered respectful input from many people on both sides of the issue.
