Prosecutor holds off on officially charging KHS student

KALKASKA – The Kalkaska County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is waiting for a potential alternative solution before possibly charging a Kalkaska High School student, who was suspected of having a weapon, fled the campus on Birch Street and led officials to put the school on lockdown during the morning hours of June 5.

Law enforcement officials were notified of an incident between KHS personnel and a 17-year-old student shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5.

According to Kalkaska Department of Public Safety reports, high school staff members believed the student was in possession of a weapon and requested to see his school bag. When confronted, the student allegedly refused to let school officials search his backpack and ran from them.

The student was later taken into custody without further incident with assistance from the Michigan State Police and Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department.

No weapon was located, according to reports.

During the search for the student, all district school buildings were placed in lockdown and officers assisted with securing the facilities.

As of Tuesday, June 11, the suspect had not been officially charged as a result of last week’s incident. Kalkaska County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Perreault said that’s because, after discussing the situation with various KPS officials and others, his office is waiting to see if an “alternate solution” that doesn’t include criminal charges may be reached.

“If this all proceeds in an acceptable direction for everyone involved, I see no reason for us to step in,” Perrault said.
