Proposed tax hike to pay for lawsuit riles village residents

KALKASKA – The Village of Kalkaska has struggled in its efforts to defend itself from lawsuits from various employees, including former village clerk, council member and president Virginia Thomas.

And, at the Kalkaska Village Council’s regular meeting on Monday, June 12, village residents expressed their frustration after finding out what the legal defeats might have cost them.

Village officials recently notified residents of the possibility of a more than 3.85-mill levy being added to local tax rolls. The one-year levy would have raised the more than $192,000 needed to pay for the judgment Thomas won in her legal fight against the village over payments for lifetime health insurance benefits.
