Springfield Park officials recently announced the cancellation of the upcoming powwow and rededication ceremony that has been held annually each September at the recreation facility.

SPRINGFIELD TWP. – Last year, volunteers and supporters said goodbye to long-time chairman of the Springfield Township Park and Recreation area, Hank Parkey, who stepped down after the annual Ah-Go-Sah Trail Traditional Powwow & Rededication celebration.

Hopefully, that didn’t also mark the final powwow at the park, celebrating the area’s Native American heritage and the establishment of the township park located at the intersection of Lund and Creighton roads.

Park officials recently announced the cancellation of the upcoming powwow and rededication ceremony that has been held annually in early September.

“Yes, we are sad to announce the powwow has been canceled for this year,” said Tammie Budrow, park director. “We are not sure if we will be able to hold one next year, but we will certainly do our best to try and pull it off.”

Budrow said officials decided to cancel the event, which has been held free of charge, due to some confusion over scheduling issues.

“The new planners did not know that the dancers needed to be booked at last year’s event for this year’s event,” she added.

Over the years, the annual powwow and rededication ceremony has become one of the most popular events held at the park, with 500-600 people flocking to the event each year. Besides being a cultural celebration of the area’s tribal history, this year’s gathering would have marked the 17h anniversary of the township park.

While the future of the powwow and rededication ceremony may be doubt, there are still plenty of other upcoming events on the park’s 2019 schedule.

The park continues to host a farmers market each Thursday from 4-7 p.m. through Sept. 12. The final farmers market of the season will also include the park’s “Volunteer Appreciation Day.” And, on Oct. 27, the park will again be overrun by dozens of ghosts and goblins during the annual “Children’s Halloween Party.”
