ELMIRA – After just two years of construction, the new EJ casting foundry will begin production by the first of December.

Officials made that announcement last Thursday, Oct. 25, during an open house for dignitaries and media at the new plant in Antrim County's Warner Township near Elmira.

The foundry, easily the largest such building in Antrim County, won't be fully on-line until spring after the installation of a second large molding line, said EJ Vice President and General Manager Tom Teske on Thursday while leading media representatives on a tour of the $125 million-plus facility.

"That will take several months, but we expect to be up to full production early next spring," Teske said.

Once fully operational, Teske said the new foundry will employ about 350 people, most of whom will make the move from the company's longtime location on the shores of Lake Charlevoix in East Jordan.

“You can probably tell that we’re extremely excited about adding this facility to our operations,” said EJ President Tracy Malpass, who represents the fourth generation of the family involved with the company’s leadership since its 1883 beginnings.

Malpass noted that the new manufacturing facility will use electricity to fire its four large furnaces, rather than coal, which will help the company meet a number of environmental, safety and employee-retention goals. Very little groundwater will be used at the plant, which is less than a mile from the headwaters of the Jordan River, the CEO continued.

"We care about maintaining the quality of northern Michigan just as much as you do," he said. "We live here, too, and we love northern Michigan."
