KALKASKA – A local woman is now safe and recovering thanks to the life-saving efforts of a Michigan State Police trooper and a pair of firefighters from Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7 who helped pull her from her burning home on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

According to a prepared statement released by the MSP Houghton Lake Post, Trooper Adam Whited and two Kalkaska Township firefighters – Lt. Kyle Jenkins and firefighter Kevin Jenkins – were the first to arrive at the structure fire on the 700 block of North Coral Street in the Village of Kalkaska.

The Jenkins joined Whited after arriving on scene in their personal vehicles at about 4 p.m. last Wednesday.

“The home was filled with smoke and a fire was raging in one of the bedrooms,” MSP officials stated. “Trooper Whited and the two firefighters entered the burning home and were able to locate a single victim by crawling through the home below the smoke.

“They located resident Denise Schroeter unconscious, lying on the kitchen floor, and were able to pull her from the burning home as additional help arrived.”

According to MSP reports, the 62-year-old female regained consciousness once outside and was transported first to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center and then to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

“At this time, she is expected to recover,” MSP officials added. “Witnesses at the scene stated Schroeter would have likely perished if not for the quick action of the first-responders.”

Whited and both Jenkins bothers were also reportedly transported to KMHC, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and released.

“It was outstanding work by the trooper and the firefighters,” said Sgt. Aaron Popa of the Kalkaska Department of Public Safety, who was also called to the scene. “Because of their actions, the woman in the fire is alive today.

“It was a truly selfless act with three people putting the life of another above their own,” he added.
