MSP investigate fatal crash on US-131

KALKASKA TWP. – Michigan State Police officials are continuing to investigate an accident that claimed the life of one person and sent another to a regional medical facility for treatment.

According to police reports, the single-car accident occurred on Friday, Dec. 29, when 61-year-old Josephine McLaughlin of Mio allegedly lost control of the Jeep she was driving on US-131, south of Maple Drive, crossed both travel lanes and was launched into a nearby tree.

McLaughlin was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle, whose name has not been released, was also ejected from the Jeep resulting from the force of the crash. The individual was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment.

While MSP officials reportedly believe icy roads and high speeds may have been contributing factors in the fatal accident, the crash remains under investigation.
