Motion to reinstate Starr fails in virtual 4-3 vote
KALKASKA — Terry Starr might have his legal battles behind him, but he’s still waiting to see if and/or when he’ll return to work as Kalkaska Public Schools’ top administrator.
A majority of the KPS Board of Education voted, 4-3, to defeat a motion to reinstate Starr immediately during a special meeting held online, using the meeting app Zoom, on Wednesday, March 25.
Those voting in opposition of the motion included Rachael Birgy, the board’s president, along with Dr. Richard Hodgman, Regan Foerster and Mary Scobey.
Nearly a year ago, the board voted to place Starr, who was hired as the district’s superintendent starting July 2018, on indefinite suspension after he was first arrested and arraigned on various felony charges, which were later reduced to misdemeanors and the case sent back to district court, in mid-April 2019.
School board officials then hired Lee Sandy as interim superintendent, a role he had served with the local school district previously.
