FIFE LAKE – Motorists and local residents have already had to learn to cope with detours and other changes during the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of US-131 and M-186.

But, they’ll have to deal with at least one more change to their traveling habits, according to an announcement released by the Michigan Department of Transportation on Tuesday, July 9.

In that statement, MDOT officials noted that, during the final construction stage of the $1.8-million project, southbound US-131 traffic will be detoured on M-186 and M-113, while northbound US-131 traffic will be maintained on US-131 through a portion of the new roundabout.

The newest detour will be in place effective Saturday, July 13.

Also, a temporary traffic signal at the M-113/M-186 already in use at the intersection will remain in place. However, stop signs for US-131 traffic at the M-113 intersection will be removed.

“It’s the fourth stage and the final stage,” said James Lake, communications representative for MDOT’s North Region. “This was always part of the plan.

“We’re just reminding people,” Lake added. “We just wanted to make sure that people know the change is coming.”

The project includes new concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk, culverts, sewer and drainage upgrades, and new signs and pavement markings. And, construction of the roundabout has already included various inconveniences, requiring the temporary closure of the Beacon & Bridge gas station and the relocation of several other driveways.
