Mass casualty drill to be held at Meadow Brook
BELLAIRE – There is no reason to be alarmed on Saturday, Oct. 13 when the area surrounding Meadow Brook Medical Center in Bellaire fills with emergency, fire and law enforcement first responders from throughout Antrim County.
It's a drill, with volunteer actors playing the part of Meadow Brook residents and staff, according to Antrim County Emergency Services Coordinator Leslie Meyers.
"Law enforcement officials, firefighters, EMS and Antrim County staff will participate in a full-scale exercise from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. designed to prepare Antrim County first responders for a mass casualty event," said Meyers.
Labeled "Operation Meadow Brook," the staged exercise will be based on a mock scenario of an airplane hitting the nursing home's three story building.
The drill will also include a partial evacuation of the medical facility. Volunteers will play the parts of residents and staff being evacuated.
The main goals of the exercise will be to address operational communications, operational coordination between public safety agencies, coordination of mass evacuations, and informing the public, the Emergency Services Coordinator said.
