Local trails welcome bevy of snowmobile enthusiasts
REGION – With more than 30 inches of snowfall in Antrim County since Christmas Eve – and additional amounts in some northern portions of Antrim County and southern Charlevoix County – local snowmobile trails were loaded with sleds over the holiday week, bringing smiles to the faces of area businesses and keeping law enforcement busy.
"The week started out steady, and by Thursday it was very busy," said Annette Marcus regarding business at the Northern Bear Country Store on Alba Highway near Lakes of the North in eastern Antrim County. "We are up about 10 percent over last year.
"The awesome snow conditions helped. I think if it were 10 to 20 degrees warmer it would have been even busier.
"Thank God for the snow!" she added.
Motels, restaurants, bars, gas stations, party stores and other businesses from Kalkaska to East Jordan, along US-131 and M-66, were busy with sled traffic. Out of the way locations, such as Settings Restaurant in Lakes of the North, were also bustling with snowmobilers.
