Central Lake High School student Desiree Herrst will travel to Lansing on June 5 to be recognized by Governor Rick Snyder as a Youth Volunteer of the Year.

CENTRAL LAKE – Central Lake High School student Desiree Herrst will be traveling June 5 to the Wharton Center in Lansing where she will meet Michigan Governor Rick Snyder who will present her with a very special award.

In addition to lending a hand to the Antrim County Animal Shelter and Grand Traverse Children's Museum, and mentoring young women with disabilities as an active volunteer with the Magic Yarn Project – creating handmade yarn wigs modeled after Disney characters – Herrst will be one of six young people in the state to be honored as a Youth Volunteer of the Year with a Governor's Service Award.

Desiree's mother Rebecca James said in the last year or so her daughter has created and donated more than 30 handmade yarn wigs for kids undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Rebecca crochets the yarn beanies for her daughter, who then crochets individual strands of yarn to the ends for hair. Desiree then styles the hair to match a Disney princess, often gluing in flowers, jewels and other accessories to get the full effect.
