Daisy Mae Wilson, who celebrated her 107th birthday on Oct. 10 surrounded by family and friends, is shown at home in Bellaire.

BELLAIRE – Daisy Mae (Lambert) Wilson finds it hard to believe that she is most likely the oldest person in Antrim County – and may not only be the oldest person in northern Michigan, but possibly the oldest person in the entire state of Michigan.

Regardless, the fact remains that Wilson, who celebrated her 107th birthday on Oct. 10, is a very special person.

Born and raised on the Lambert family farm on McKinney Road in Kearney Township, Wilson grew up with seven brothers and sisters, all of whom have since passed away, and is the only known remaining student of the old Kearney Township No. 2 one-room school house on Derenzy Road.

She's probably also the only person who remembers the hunting and fishing lodge owned by the Fisk family in what is now Mohrmann Park, where her mother worked as a cook and Daisy occasionally helped out serving meals.

Ask her about her time at the lodge, and her eyes still sparkle when she says, "I attended many of the dances they had there. Oh, what a good time we had!"

After marrying her husband Earl, who passed away in 1982, the Kearney Township resident moved to her present home, an old farmhouse built in approximately 1895 on M-88 south of the village of Bellaire, in 1943, and raised her four children. She now has 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, including two brand new baby boys, who were given two baby quilts this summer handmade by their great-grandmother.

Although Wilson does have some limitations, in addition to still being blessed with good eyes and hands that allowed her to make those quilts, she can still get around well enough to be able to make her own breakfast and clean up the dishes, according to her daughter Mariel, who Wilson now lives with.

Once a member of a league at the now defunct Bellaire Bowling Alley located in downtown Bellaire, Daisy Wilson loved to bowl for many years, and still enjoys watching baseball and basketball games on television.
