Local MSU educator working to revive Puerto Rican dairy industry
BELLAIRE – When most think of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, they think of swaying palm trees, historic Spanish architecture and glorious beaches.
But Stan Moore, of rural Bellaire, thinks of dairy cows.
Yes – dairy cows – and, until a devastating hurricane last September, a thriving dairy industry.
In fact, dairy farmers are the biggest single element of Puerto Rico's agricultural economy, accounting for about a third of the territory’s total agricultural production.
With fellow MSU Extension dairy educator Phil Durst, Moore recently conducted a training program on the island in conjunction with the University of Puerto Rico. It was designed to lure new dairy farmers to the island's dairy industry, which until Hurricane Maria arrived on Sept. 20, was truly a jewel in the U.S. territory's crown.
