Kalkaska resident, Mark Holston (Jr.), a volunteer firefighter with Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7, was honored Dec. 18 for his part in helping save Dr. David Steffey, who had collapsed while at the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City during the early morning hours of Nov. 25.

KALKASKA – Most any police officer, firefighter or first-responder will say they don’t go out looking to be a hero. They just happen to be at the right place at the right time, when someone is in need.

Mark Holston (Jr.), a Kalkaska resident and Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7 firefighter, says that was the case when he was again part of a life-saving effort while strolling through Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City while on his way for a business trip shortly before 5 a.m. on Nov. 25.

“I walked into the airport and, as soon as I got inside, I noticed a man lying on the ground with a few people around him,” Holston said. “I went over to him and checked for a pulse. When he didn’t have one I started CPR.”

According to the local firefighter, husband and father of two, an airport employee also sprung into action by retrieving an “AED” used to shock individuals back to life.

“There was a lady there, as well, that helped me hook up the AED and we shocked the patient twice,” he said. “We continued CPR until the paramedics and fire department arrived on scene and then they took over.”

Holston later admitted he didn’t have a whole lot of time to think about what had happened. After relaying the scenario to paramedics, Holston jumped on his flight and was soon headed to Oregon.

“It all happened pretty quickly,” he said of the rescue. “You just act.

“You really don’t think about it.”
