Local barber shop moves just around the block, set to launch toy drive

BELLAIRE – Appointments are always encouraged, but walk-ins showing up unannounced last week at The Bellaire Barbers on Cayuga Street in Bellaire would have found a vacant building. That’s because the shop recently moved about one block north to 706 Broad St.

According to longtime barber Kevin Dawson, the prior building had been occupied by his shop and Gatsby’s. When Gatsby’s decided to close, the landlord put it up for sale.

“I couldn’t afford it,” Dawson said, “And if I could, I didn’t want to buy it. I’d like to cut back, be semi-retired and have another barber come in and work full time.”

A conversation about the situation came up with one of Dawson’s longtime customers, Josh Watrous. Josh’s family operates Eden Construction, and owns the old Creamery property in the 700 block of Broad Street. Watrous had planned to renovate a smaller building on the property to serve as an office for the construction company. After talking with Dawson, he had another idea.
