Library board hears public input on proposed addition

Dave Lein, Editor

ELK RAPIDS – While most of the questions and concerns have already been discussed at various meetings over the last several years, the Elk Rapids Library Board of Trustees sought to bring all of those elements together on Monday for a public hearing regarding its proposed Library Improvement Project.

And the public responded, with nearly 200 village and area residents filling the Historic Elk Rapids Township Hall, some standing in back during the two-hour gathering when seating became scarce.

Anticipating a large crowd, the session began with a review of the proposed expansion to the district library – which serves and is supported by the Village and Township of Elk Rapids, Milton Township and (through contracted services) a portion of Torch Lake Township – highlights of a requested smaller addition, and clarification of perceived “rumors” and misinformation circulating throughout the community.

That was followed by a time allotted for public questions and comments. Upon entry to the meeting, attendees seeking to ask a question or make a comment were asked to fill out a postcard, which were collected and arranged alphabetically by mediator Janet Koch of the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance.
