KALKASKA – Voters in the Village of Kalkaska will now have two chances to cast a ballot for their pick for village president.

Members and supporters of Kalkaska For Peace, as well as its political arm, Kalkaska Citizens For Responsible Government, were successful in forcing a recall election targeting incumbent Village president Jeff Sieting.

The group collected more than 230 signatures; although that number was later whittled down to 196 after the signatures were reviewed and certified by county election officials. Still, it was enough to trigger the recall election now set for Tuesday, May 8.

“I am excited that the village residents will have an opportunity to make their voices heard through an early election,” said KFP representative Elizabeth Dunham. “A recall was not my first choice, but many community members have spoken up since last summer and have been told their input does not matter.

“I hope that an early election reminds our elected officials that they do answer to the voters,” she added.
