Lady Elks tally two wins in soccer season

ELK RAPIDS — The Lady Elks soccer team last played in June of 2019, a regional semifinal loss to Houghton Lake. Nearly two years and 11 seniors later the Elks are back on the pitch picking up where they left off, playing hard and tallying wins. The Elks picked up a 4-2 win in their home opener against Traverse City West on Monday, giving them two wins to start the season.

The Monday non-conference game was played in occasional rain and a chilly wind, with masked fans for both teams in attendance, all happy that girls soccer was back on the field.

The Elks made the scoreboard first with a goal by Lauren Bingham with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Bingham got by the Titans’ defender for a one-on one with the keeper, scoring with a hesitation kick to the left side of the net. This was the lone first half goal, giving the Elks a 1-0 at intermission. Three minutes into the second half the Elks were awarded an indirect kick in the box after the Titans’ keeper handled a ball passed back to her by a teammate. West lined up 10 players on the goal line, and Mary Gregorski tapped the ball to Kendall Standfest, who squeezed a rifle shot into the left corner between the Titan defensive wall giving the Elks a 2-0 lead. Ten minutes later the Elks increased the lead to 3-0 on a goal by Mary Gregorski in a melee in front of the net. The Titans scored their first goal midway through the half, but Bingham countered with a breakaway goal from 25 yards out for a 4-1 Elk Rapids lead. The Titans added a final goal with seconds remaining in the game. Jorja Jenema had six saves in net for the Elks.
