KPS votes to hire Starr as new Superintendent
KALKASKA – In the end, the Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education didn’t have to really look that far to find the school district’s next superintendent.
School board members voted, 6-1, to enter into negotiations with Terry Starr, a principal with neighboring Elk Rapids Schools at a special meeting Monday, April 30, after a second round of interviews.
The interviews were part of the ongoing process to replace outgoing Superintendent Karen Sherwood, who announced her resignation in December. The board members invited Starr, principal at Elk Rapids’ Cherryland Middle School, and Delton-Kellogg Schools elementary principal Steven Scoville back for another round of talks Monday.
Both candidates were praised for their leadership abilities, although Starr might have gained an edge with what board members perceived to connect and build relationships both internally and within the community.
“He can bring the board, staff and people of this community together,” said Dr. Richard Hodgman.
