KALKASKA — Just when many local residents were hoping to be free of restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, a reported spike in cases has Kalkaska Public Schools reverting to temporarily shutting down in-person learning at most district schools.

District officials announced April 15 that in-person classes at Birch Street and Cherry Street elementary schools, as well as Kalkaska Middle School and Kalkaska High School, would be closed April 19-23.

According to KPS Supt. Terry Starr, only Rapid City Elementary School will continue to have in-person classes while students at the other schools will be offered “remote” learning options online.

“We do not like going to remote learning, though we felt it necessary as the affect size and rate (of local COVID-19 cases) grew increasingly throughout last week and believed we had to do something to hopefully slow the spread,” Starr said.
