KALKASKA – The Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education took its first step in finding the school district’s next superintendent.

At its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 8, board members approved hiring the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to assist with the search. The estimated cost for the service is set to be $5,800 plus expenses.

The action became necessary after the district’s current superintendent, Karen Sherwood, announced her resignation in a Dec. 18 letter to board members.

“It has become apparent that a strained relationship exists between certain members of the current board of education and me,” stated the 49-year-old Sherwood, the district’s top administrator since mid-2014.

“Under the circumstances, I believe it would be in the best interest of the students for me to step aside to allow the board time to hire a replacement superintendent and to accomplish a smooth transition,” she added at that time.
