KPS board uses workshop to fine tune contract offer to Starr
KALKASKA – Just a week after selecting Elk Rapids Cherryland Middle School Principal Terry Starr to be the district’s next superintendent, members of the Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education held a workshop Monday, May 7, to reach consensus on a potential contract offer.
Five of the seven board members were present at Monday’s workshop, with John Rogers and Wendy Watson absent from the meeting focused on outlining a potential three-year contract with Starr. The board had voted 6-1 at a special meeting April 30 to enter into negotiations with the middle school principal, who was also not in attendance Monday.
If the two parties can agree on a contract, Starr is set to succeed outgoing KPS Supt. Karen Sherwood, who announced her resignation in December. Sherwood’s last day is slated for June 30, with the board planning to have a new administrator take over the following day.
Board members decided to use a more detailed contract as the basis for its offer to Starr, with board president Kevin Davis adding that it was far more detailed than the “wishy-washy” contract the board had with Sherwood.
“It’s more clear cut,” Davis said.
While advertising a salary between $115,000 and $125,000, board members agreed to offer Starr a starting salary of $117,000. That would increase $2,000 in each of the following two years of the contract.
