KMS Concert Band brings home four-straight ‘Superior’ ratings
REGION – Under the direction of Kalkaska Public Schools Instrumental Music Educator Craig M. Chissus, the Kalkaska Middle School Concert Band on March 2 earned four-straight Superior, Division 1 ratings.
The top level performance qualified the band to attend this spring’s Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) State Festival, scheduled for Friday, May 3 in Gaylord.
More than the sun was shining on March 2 after the KMS Concert Band finished its morning performances during district competition held at Elk Rapids High School.
From its three prepared pieces to sight-reading, each of the four adjudicators awarded the band with a Superior final rating.
MSBOA defines “Superior” as “Highly refined and developed. Consistency is demonstrated throughout the ensemble … A few minor isolated flaws might exist, but they do not detract from the performance.”
Written and verbal feedback offered by the judges reinforced KMS’ firm grasp of those attributes.
“Solid rhythm today!” commented Edward J. Lucius, a Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association adjudicator. “I appreciate the dynamic contrast; strive for greater contrast. Good spirit and energy in today’s performance.”
Another concert room judge Raymond Reynolds, stated, “Nice looking band! Great tempo (“Eagle Crest March”), with good dynamics and style. Good Job! Great low brass playing … strong tonal concepts.”
