KALKASKA – Those planning to attend the 49th annual Kalkaska Luncheon already know when they’ll be at the Kalkaska Church of Christ. Now, they’ll know who they’ll be helping to honor.

The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation announced the winners of the 2019 Kalkaska Business and Kalkaska Citizen of the Year, both of which will be honored at the luncheon set for Wednesday, April 24.

Kevin Rogols was announced as the 2019 Citizen of the Year honoree, while the family-owned Lodi Trading Company was selected as the 2019 Business of the Year.

“Proud to be a part of this great community,” said Rogols, administrator at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, when asked about the award.

As the top executive at KMHC, Rogols is helping oversee a more than $14-million expansion and upgrade to the community-owned medical facility.

The Lodi Trading Company, located off of M-66, just north of the intersection with Boardman Road, might be a more modest operation. But, it also boasts a proud history of family ownership and service to area farms and its local patrons.

The family business started in 1978 under Mike and Patty Cox, and was called Natural Farm Products. Then, in 1987, they purchased what is now the store’s current location, which is owned and operated by their son, Zack Cox, and his wife, Katelyn.

In the past year, the Lodi Trading Company has undergone more changes, including a renovation and addition of 4,000 square-feet of space.

That has kept the Cox family busy, helping make the chamber award even more of a surprise.

“I know the award is out there, but in the day-to-day stuff that we deal with keeping the store running properly, it isn't something that you think about winning,” Zach Cox said. “It was a very nice, very appreciated surprise.

“I feel fortunate to get to deal with our community,” he added. “There are a lot of very good, decent people who live, work and visit here. It's an honor to have been selected as the Business of the Year.”

The 2019 luncheon is slated for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 24, at the Kalkaska Church of Christ on West Kalkaska Road. Tickets are $20 per person or groups may purchase a whole table.
