According to Kalkaska County Road Commission officials, work on an asphalt crown correction and overlay of 2.5 miles of county road in the Rapid City area, from Walker to Rapid City Road, was expected to be completed prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. However, officials still urged motorists to be cautious when traveling through the area.

RAPID CITY – Motorists traveling around the Rapid City area will experience a much smoother ride, at least on more than two miles of Valley Road, as the Kalkaska County Road Commission wraps up an asphalt overlay project on the roadway.

According to KCRC manager John Rogers, the 2.5-mile project will include a asphalt crown correction and overlay on Valley Road, from Walker to Rapid City Road.

“Valley Road is a high volume road between Kalkaska and Rapid City,” Rogers said of the project. “This road is used by many residents of Kalkaska County.

“This has been paved in sections over many years. This will be the final segment.”

Overall, the project carries a price tag of about $300,000.

Rogers said Clearwater Township is chipping in $60,000 for the work, while another $100,000 will come from state funding. The remaining $140,000 is being covered by the four-year, 1.0-mill countywide road millage approved by voters in 2014.

The project got underway recently, with paving planned to be completed by Wednesday, May 23. However, motorists will still want to use caution when traveling through the area during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
