KALKASKA TWP. – While many are enjoying a summer full of vacations, family gatherings and other fun-filled activities, the Kalkaska County Road Commission (KCRC) remains hard at work in trying to complete a busy project schedule.

Recently, the KCRC looked to complete the repair of 2,500 feet of Kettle Lake Road in Kalkaska Township that was “in dire need of repair,” according to road commission manager John Rogers.

“This stretch of road runs through a swamp and couldn’t be simply overlayed with a fresh coat of asphalt,” Rogers said. “The fix was much more complex. We had to pulverize and add gravel prior to paving.

“This stretch of road took a toll on vehicles and the Road Commission was constantly patching potholes.”

The repair, including materials, labor and equipment, is estimated to cost local taxpayers about $80,000 by the time it’s completed.

Along with the repaving, the effort also includes replacement of two culverts.

“Kalkaska Township is paying for all the materials on this project and the road commission is doing the work,” Rogers added. “This is a true testament of how much work we can get done countywide with the townships participating and our county millage.”

The improvements on Kettle Lake Road are just one of several major projects on the KCRC’s work list.
