Kalkaska septic inspection program should be strengthened and enforced, not abolished

To the Editor:
The Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners, at the request of some local realtors, is now ready to vote on abolishing the Point of Sale Septic Inspection Program, which requires home sellers to have their systems inspected and serious problems corrected before the home is sold.
Improperly built or maintained septic systems inadequately treat domestic household waste.  They release raw sewage, disease-carrying pathogens, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and other pollutants into our well water, and ultimately to nearby lakes and streams. This is an especially profound problem in Kalkaska County due to our sandy soil.
