KALKASKA — The years 1971, 1996 and 2021 are linked in Kalkaska County history by way of a time capsule.

The time capsule, which Kalkaska resident Dave Wolfe was pivotal in creating during Kalkaska County’s centennial celebration in 1971, was exhumed for the third time for the county’s sesquicentennial recently, revisiting artifacts that had been placed in the capsule back in 1971, then again in 1996, with new items being placed in the capsule this time around.

A small group of bystanders watched as the time capsule was dug up on Wednesday, Aug. 4 by Wilbert Vault Company in Traverse City as the county prepared for the celebration of its 150th anniversary. While the focus was on that recently-held event, the digging up of the time capsule also brought back memories of some of that history from the previous two installments — glass Kirkpatrick Dairy milk jugs; a variety of drawings from elementary students representing Forest Area, Crawford, Rapid City, Kalkaska and South Boardman schools; a photo of Kalkaska High School students in 1971; articles from 1996 newspapers; a mason jar with Marcel Cunningham’s signature for his creation and donation of the 1971 concrete vault; and 1971 finances and pictures from the county’s centennial celebration.
