KALKASKA – The Kalkaska Conservation District (KCD) and Grand Traverse Hiking Club (GTHC) invite all to join them for monthly weeknight hikes on the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) to nearby Smith Lake.

The first walk in the series will be Thursday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. The KCD will lead the out and back 1.5 mile hike to the lake on an easy, slight-elevation trail. Participants are encouraged to carpool to the intersection of Smith Lake Road and the NCT trail. Smith Lake Road is located off Island Lake Road, just west of Kalkaska.

A second, longer hike is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17; also starting at 5:30 pm. Participants for the July trek are asked to meet at the M-72 Park and Ride lot on Kalkaska Road. The three-mile out and back hike will also follow the North Country Trail route.

KCD Conservation Specialist Renee Penny will lead both hikes.

“A ton of work has gone into making Kalkaska a Trail Town on the NCT,” Penny said, “and now we all need to get out and enjoy our great trail system.”

Penny and the KCD provide leadership in the natural resource management of Kalkaska County by working closely with private landowners. They deliver forest management assistance, erosion control for lake and stream health, and host a variety of events to inform residents and visitors alike.
