Joseph D. Variot

Joseph D. Variot, 91, of Mancelona, passed away on May 10, 2019 at his home.
Joe was born on Nov. 22, 1927 in Detroit, the son of Joseph and Elcie (Gossett) Variot.
Joe served in the U.S. Navy for 13 years and was former commander of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets. He served in World War II and Korea.
Joe spent time coming to Mancelona for many years prior to moving permanently over 20 years ago. He was a member of the Alba United Methodist Church, Mancelona Moose Lodge No. 2254, Elk Rapids AMVETS, American Legion in Mancelona as well as the Central Lake VFW.
In his spare time Joe enjoyed coin collecting, fishing and hunting.
Prior to moving to Mancelona, Joe was active in the Detroit area. He worked for the City of Detroit Civic Center, and the Symphony Orchestra as a ticket director.
Joe is survived by four children: Michael (Beatriz) Variot of Seebrook, Texas, Joseph (Susan) Variot of Mancelona, Leslie Hamilton of Traverse City, and Matthew Variot; seven grandchildren: Crystal Edwards, Joseph (Beverly) Variot, Samantha Variot, Jessica Variot, Jacob Hamilton, Infinity Variot, and Eternity Variot; five great-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one great-great-granddaughter; two half-brothers, Jody Variot of Roswell, New Mexico and James Variot of Bradenton, Florida; and a half-sister, Julie Variot of Aurora, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Variot; four wives; two brothers, Donald and Richard Variot; a sister, Diane LaDuke; and a great-grandson, James Edwards.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, May 17 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with military honors immediately following also at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
