Jaynee Boni winner of Shay Memorial Foundation Scholarship

CENTRAL LAKE — The Shay Memorial Foundation awarded Central Lake High School senior, Jaynee Boni, the Ryan Shay Memorial Scholarship for graduation year 2020.

Boni is the daughter of Scott and Kim Boni, of Central Lake. During high school she participated in cross country, track, cheerleading, dance, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was ranked third in her class and graduated with honors. Boni will further her education at North Central Michigan College while determining her major career path.

The Shay Memorial Foundation was established in 2008 in memory of 28-year-old Ryan Shay, a 1997 valedictorian of Central Lake, who graduated from University of Notre Dame where he earned a degree in economics while earning multiple academic and athletic awards. He was the most decorated individual in the history of Notre Dame athletics and was the only non-football player to win the prestigious Knute Rockne Award. Ryan specialized in distance running and represented the United States in many global competitions. On Nov. 3, 2007, he passed away from sudden heart failure while competing in the 2007 United States Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City.
