ALDEN – Theresa Shurman has some advice for deer hunters.

"Please be careful," she said. "Don't let anybody else have to go through what we're going through."

Shurman made that statement to media Friday night after her son Justin Beutel was shot and killed Thursday afternoon while deer hunting on the opening day of the firearm deer season in Antrim County's Helena Township.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which along with the Michigan State Police is investigating the incident, the 38 year-old was alone on family property off W. Elder Road just east of East Torch Lake Drive north of Alden when he was shot by another individual who had been hunting nearby.

Responding to a 911 call of a hunting accident dispatched at approximately 1 p.m., DNR Law Enforcement Officer Andrea Albert and an available EMS crew located Beutel and immediately began CPR, but he did not respond to resuscitation efforts.

Beutel, a resident of Sanford, was an avid and experienced sportsman, according to his mother, who said he had texted a photo to a friend of himself with the seven-point buck he had taken that morning just a few minutes before the incident.
