Rising gas prices shouldn't have an effect on this year's summer tourism season, according to local chamber of commerce representatives, who added that they believe weather can be much more detrimental to summer business than gas prices.

REGION - The slow, but sure, rise in gas prices over recent months – now approaching $3 per gallon – might affect the driving plans of some, but Bellaire Chamber of Commerce Director Patti Savant, isn't really concerned that the increase will have negative effects on northern Michigan’s summer tourism this year.

"It's been my experience, with the high prices we had two years ago – and a few years before that, when gas reached $4 a gallon – that our summer visitors will still come," said Savant. "Once they have set their dates for vacation and made their reservations, they will be here."

Associate chamber director Rachel Krino agreed, noting that she had been told by several area resorts and motels that bookings for the upcoming summer were "very good."

Average gas prices statewide have risen about nine cents per gallon in the past week, according to AAA Michigan, which as of last Friday cited average prices of $2.88 per gallon for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline.

According to the Dearborn-based auto club, prices are about 34 cents more than at the same time last year and at the highest point since 2015.

The organization, which surveys daily fuel prices at 2,800 stations across the state, cited a low price of about $2.74 per gallon in the Marquette area, with the highest, of $2.92 per gallon, found in the Jackson area.
