Benjamin Dyste, 8, and his younger brothers Larsen, 6, and Clyde, 4, enjoy a treat during last year’s “Art in Ice – Sweet & Nice” event downtown Bellaire. The March 8 festivities are again set to include ice carving by local culinary artists and a Sweet Treats Bake Off competition.

BELLAIRE – Cool, creative and tasty. That’s what’s on tap next Friday, Downtown Bellaire.

The Bellaire Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Shanty Creek Resorts and the American Culinary Federation of Northwest Michigan will once again bring “Art in Ice, Sweet & Nice” to Bellaire’s downtown area from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 8.

In a unique exhibition, attendees can observe as 3,000 pounds of ice – in 20x40-inch blocks – are transformed into specialized sculptures through the carving talents of regional culinary artists. Each of the blocks are sponsored by local businesses, and are often honed to reflect an element of that particular business.

Ice Sponsors (to date) include: The Julia Pietrowicz Team – Keller Williams Realty, Bellaire Animal Hospital, DEK Realty: Northern Michigan Real Estate, Hello Vino, Debbie Alexander – Coldwell Banker Schmidt Real Estate, Shanty Creek Resorts, Uniquely North, Fischer Insurance Agency, Inc., Ruthann’s Gourmet Bakery, and Otherside Irrigation Services.

Also returning as part of this year’s festivities is the popular “Sweet Treats Bake Off,” featuring samples from area pastry chefs. Similar to Bellaire’s Soup Cook Off held each December, a $5 ticket gives visitors an opportunity to taste up to 10 baked sweet treats that include a fruit ingredient.

Tickets holders will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite treat while enjoying the live ice sculpting. The winning pastry chef will hold bragging rights during 2019 as the “Best Sweet Treat” in Bellaire.

Only a very limited amount of  the original 200 tickets remain, and are available at the Bellaire Chamber, Hello Vino, Ruthann’s Gourmet Bakery, Paddles & Pedals, Fischer Insurance and The Flying Pig.
